What is R2 standby?

Under the Travel Status dropdown for leisure travel process, selection that is available to IndiGo employees is “R2 standby”. R2 Standby means Leisure standby.

R2 standby is a specific classification used in "non-revenue" travel (non-rev), primarily by airline employees and their eligible dependents. In the myIDTravel system and other airline staff booking platforms, "R2" typically refers to a higher priority standby status compared to R3 or R4. While the exact definition can vary slightly by airline, R2 generally signifies a "personal travel" priority that is higher than buddy passes or "other airline" (ZED) travelers, but lower than "positive space" (must-ride) or "duty travel" (R1). When a staff member lists for an R2 standby flight, they are placed on a list and will only be cleared for a seat once all revenue passengers and higher-priority employees have been accommodated. In 2026, with flights often reaching record load factors, traveling as an R2 standby requires significant flexibility, as being "left at the gate" is a common occurrence. Travelers using R2 status are encouraged to monitor flight loads carefully and have backup plans, as the priority only guarantees a spot on the list, not a confirmed seat on the aircraft.
