As of 2026, the supernatural horror film Sinister (2012) has reclaimed the top spot as the "scariest movie ever made" according to the Science of Scare project. This study measures the heart rates and heart rate variability of viewers to determine which films provoke the strongest physical fear response. While classic critics often point to The Exorcist (1973) or Hereditary (2018) as the psychological leaders, the jump scares and tension in Sinister resulted in the highest average heart rate spike among test subjects. Other top contenders in the "scientific" rankings include Host (2020), which held the top spot during the pandemic years, and Insidious. For many film buffs, the "scariest" is subjective; however, if you are looking for the movie that is statistically most likely to make your heart pound in 2026, Sinister is the recognized champion.
