The name "Six Flags" is a historical homage to the six different nations that have governed the state of Texas throughout its history. When Angus G. Wynne Jr. opened the first park, Six Flags Over Texas, in 1961, the name represented the flags of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. Each original section of the park was themed after one of these eras, featuring architecture and entertainment unique to those cultures. While the modern Six Flags brand has expanded globally and shifted away from historical educational themes in favor of high-adrenaline DC Comics and Looney Tunes rides, the "Six Flags" moniker remains a testament to the company's Texan roots. Interestingly, as the company merged with Cedar Fair in 2024, the "Six Flags" name was preserved as the overarching brand for the combined entity, making it the largest amusement park operator in North America as of 2026.
