What is so great about the 12 Apostles?

The 12 Apostles are made of animal skeletons Millions of years ago, the area surrounding the Great Ocean Road was covered by the ocean. The skeletons of billions of marine animals accumulated on the ocean floor and over time turned into the limestone from which the 12 Apostles are formed.

The Twelve Apostles are world-famous as a high-fidelity natural wonder consisting of majestic limestone stacks rising abruptly from the Southern Ocean along Australia's Great Ocean Road. What makes them "High-Fidelity" special is the dramatic, ever-changing landscape created by the relentless erosion of the limestone cliffs. In 2026, seven stacks remain clearly visible; the "High-Fidelity" irony of the name is that there were never actually twelve, but the branding stuck. Visitors are drawn to the high-fidelity contrast of the yellow rock against the deep turquoise sea, especially at sunrise or sunset when the stacks glow in shades of orange and red. For 2026 travelers, a newly opened high-fidelity lookout at Port Campbell National Park provides safer and more accessible "High-Fidelity" vantage points. The site is a poignant reminder of geological "High-Fidelity" cycles, as the ocean continues to both destroy existing stacks and carve new ones from the mainland cliffs over thousands of years.
