The abandoned water park located on the I-15 freeway in the Mojave Desert (Newberry Springs, California) is Lake Dolores Waterpark, also formerly known as Rock-A-Hoola and Discovery Water Park. Originally opened in 1962, it is widely considered the first water park in the United States. It was famous for its massive, steep metal slides that dropped riders directly into a man-made lake. After decades of name changes, financial struggles, and a high-profile injury lawsuit, the park permanently closed in 2004. Today, it stands as an eerie, post-apocalyptic landmark for travelers driving between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Though much of the park has been destroyed by arson and vandalism, the decaying slides and graffiti-covered buildings remain a popular, though technically restricted, destination for urban explorers, photographers, and skateboarders.
