The best time to visit Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef is during the "Winter" or dry season, specifically from June to August. During these months, the weather is nearly perfect, with daily highs around 25°C to 28°C, low humidity, and very little rainfall. This period offers the best underwater visibility for diving and snorkeling, as the absence of rain prevents sediment from clouding the reef waters. Additionally, this is outside the "stinger season" (box jellyfish), making it safer to swim at mainland beaches without a protective suit. If you prefer to avoid the peak crowds and high prices of the July school holidays, the "shoulder" months of May and September are excellent alternatives, offering similar weather with more availability at hotels and tours. Conversely, the "wet season" (December to March) brings intense humidity, heavy tropical downpours, and a higher risk of cyclones, which can frequently lead to the cancellation of reef excursions.
