During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm without the intense humidity and heavy rainfall of the summer wet season. Spring also offers the best conditions for driving on the 75-Mile Beach, as the sand is firmer and less prone to deep washouts. If you are interested in wildlife, August to October is peak whale-watching season, where humpback whales can be seen in the calm waters of Hervey Bay. Alternatively, the winter months of June to August are ideal for those who prefer cooler hiking temperatures and fewer crowds, with daily highs around 22°C (72°F). However, avoid the late December and January period if possible, as this coincides with Australian school holidays; the island becomes extremely crowded, prices for barge transfers and permits skyrocket, and the subtropical summer heat can make camping or long 4WD treks quite uncomfortable.
