What is the controversial Splash Mountain ride?

While many Disney guests remain unaware, Splash Mountain is a themed attraction based on Song of the South, a 1946 live-action and animated film that has been widely criticized for the way it depicted race relations in the post-Civil War South.

The film, set on a plantation, features an elderly Black man known as Uncle Remus who tells traditional African American folk tales to white children cared for by Black servants. Walter White, the former executive secretary of the NAACP, said the film helps to perpetuate a dangerously glorified picture of slavery.

Is Splash Mountain Scary? Splash Mountain is not an intentionally scary ride overall, but has some spooky moments. This attraction does feature a pretty substantial dark ride portion lasting about 5 and a half minutes and includes a few creepy characters as well as some mild peril along the way.
