What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class on Italian trains?

First-class seating is more spacious, with fewer seats per compartment, and usually more quiet. There is more room for luggage and it will generally be less crowded as most passengers typically travel in second class.

On Italian high-speed trains like the Frecciarossa, the primary difference between classes is the level of space, service, and privacy. In 2nd Class (Standard), you get a comfortable, clean seat in a 2+2 layout, which is perfectly adequate for most journeys. In 1st Class (Business), the seating is in a more spacious 2+1 layout, offering wider leather seats and significantly more legroom. First-class passengers also receive a complimentary welcome drink (coffee, tea, or prosecco) and a small snack or sweet treat served at their seat. For those seeking even more luxury, the Frecciarossa offers an "Executive" class with only 10 rotating leather chairs per carriage and full meal service. On regional trains, the difference is much less noticeable, often just involving slightly cleaner fabric and a quieter cabin. In 2026, 1st class remains the preferred choice for business travelers or those with large luggage, as the carriages are generally less crowded and provide a more tranquil environment for the duration of the trip.
