What is the difference between 1st class and 2nd class on the Bernina Express?

There are 2nd class and 1st class carriages on every Bernina Express train. The 2nd class carriages have fabric seats and there are more seats in every carriage whereas 1st class has leather seats, more space, and fewer seats. Both classes have the same panoramic windows, power sockets, and free WiFi.

The primary difference between classes on the Bernina Express is the level of space and seating configuration, as both offer the same breathtaking panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows. First Class features a "2+1" seating layout, providing significantly wider leather seats, more elbow room, and extra legroom compared to the more communal atmosphere of Second Class. This class is ideal for travelers seeking a quieter, more exclusive experience with fewer passengers per carriage. Second Class uses a "2+2" seating arrangement with comfortable fabric seats; it is more "sociable" and often favored by groups or families. While both classes have access to power outlets and clean restrooms, First Class passengers often benefit from more generous luggage storage space. Regardless of class, the journey across the Alps remains identical, and a refreshment trolley service serves snacks and drinks to all passengers for a fee, making the choice purely about personal comfort and budget.

For short trips of an hour or two, I'll go in 2nd class. For longer journeys or busy times/routes (as Altamiro noted), I like 1st class. Seats are definitely more comfortable in 1st class, and there's more leg room and space overall. We bought first class once and didn't think it was worth the difference.
