What is the difference between anytime day single and off-peak?

Anytime tickets can be bought as single or return; off-peak tickets can usually only be bought as returns. Usually all ticket types are available as either standard or first class, but there are exceptions – for example Chiltern Railways does not offer first class.

In the UK rail system, the difference lies in flexibility versus cost. An Anytime Day Single is the most expensive and flexible ticket; it allows you to travel on any train on a specific date, including during "peak" rush hours (usually before 09:30 and between 15:30–18:30 on weekdays). This is ideal for business travelers whose plans may change. In contrast, an Off-Peak ticket is significantly cheaper but carries time restrictions. It is generally valid only on trains that depart after the morning rush hour and avoid the evening peak. "Super Off-Peak" tickets are even more restrictive, often limited to weekends or the quietest midday periods. While both tickets allow you to travel on any operator for the route, the Off-Peak ticket requires you to be mindful of the clock; if you board a peak-time train with an off-peak ticket, you will likely be charged a penalty or forced to pay the difference to an Anytime fare.
