What is the difference between Brightline and Tri-Rail?

The train is fancier than Tri-Rail, and it costs more. You might even call Brightline a luxury train. But there are ways to save money and enjoy the ride.

Brightline and Tri-Rail are both rail systems serving South Florida, but they offer vastly different experiences and price points. Brightline is a privately owned, high-speed rail service designed for comfort and speed, connecting Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando. It features "Premium" lounges, modern interiors, leather seats, and onboard food service, with tickets typically starting around $15–$79 depending on the route. In contrast, Tri-Rail is a publicly funded commuter rail that runs along a separate corridor further inland, serving 19 stations between Mangonia Park and Miami. It is much more affordable ($2.50–$8.75) and is used primarily by daily commuters rather than travelers. In 2026, Tri-Rail is facing significant budget challenges, while Brightline is focusing on long-term profitability under new leadership. Essentially, choose Brightline for a fast, luxury travel experience between city centers, and choose Tri-Rail if you are on a budget or need to reach specific suburban stops.
