What is the difference between first class and excellence class at Glacier Express?

The major difference is that unlike First Class, which has double seats on one side and a single seat on the other side of the aisle, Excellence Class has a single window seat on each side. So there's more space and more legroom.

The difference between First Class and Excellence Class on the Glacier Express is the difference between a high-end train ride and a "seven-star" luxury experience. While First Class offers spacious 2-1 seating and panoramic windows, Excellence Class is a dedicated, exclusive carriage limited to only 20 passengers in a 1-1 window-seat-only configuration. In Excellence Class, you receive a six-course meal with wine pairings served at your seat, a personal concierge, and access to a private "Glacier Bar" located within the carriage. You also receive an iPad for the duration of the trip that provides an interactive map and historical commentary. While both classes see the same breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps, the Excellence Class experience includes high-end amenities like plush leather seats and a "welcome platter" of appetizers. The price reflects this: a seat in Excellence Class requires a 1st Class ticket plus a significant "supplement" (often around 470 CHF), making it one of the most expensive and sought-after rail experiences in the world.
