What is the difference between premium TransitChek MetroCard and unlimited ride MetroCard?

The 30 day Unlimited Ride MetroCard is good for 30 days after the 1st day of use, so if you do not start using the card, your 30 day period does not begin until that first day of usage. The Premium MetroCard is valid for an entire calendar month regardless of usage.

The primary difference between a Premium TransitChek MetroCard and a standard Unlimited Ride MetroCard in 2026 is the billing cycle and replacement protection. A standard 30-day Unlimited MetroCard is purchased by an individual and expires exactly 30 days after the first use; if lost, it is generally difficult to recover the value unless it was bought with a credit card at a kiosk. The Premium TransitChek MetroCard is a corporate-benefit product (usually through WageWorks) that provides unlimited rides for an entire year. It is billed monthly at the same rate as a 30-day card but never "expires" as long as you remain in the program. Most importantly, it is refillable and replaceable; if lost or stolen, the provider can deactivate the old card and mail you a new one with your remaining "unlimited" status intact. It offers the same local bus and subway access but with significantly more administrative convenience for commuters.
