What is the difference between standard and basic economy on British Airways?

Basic is our lowest fare offered on selected routes. It comes with hand baggage, and an allocated seat; perfect for when you're travelling light. Standard is our fully inclusive economy fare. With checked baggage, and freedom to choose your own seat, it's ideal for a longer trip.

The primary difference between British Airways Basic Economy and Standard Economy (Plus) is the checked baggage allowance and flexibility. A "Basic" fare is a "hand-baggage only" (HBO) ticket; you are allowed one cabin bag and one personal item, but if you want to check a suitcase, you must pay a significant fee (often £30–£60 per bag). Basic fares also do not allow for any flight changes or refunds and do not permit seat selection until check-in opens 24 hours before departure. In contrast, a "Standard/Plus" fare includes one 23kg checked bag, the ability to select your seat for free starting 48 hours before the flight, and the option to change your flight for a fee (plus fare difference). In 2026, the price gap between the two is often only £15–£25, meaning if you plan to check even one small bag, the Standard fare is almost always the more economical and less stressful choice.
