The easiest and most efficient route to Zermatt is by train, as the village is entirely car-free. Most travelers arrive via Zurich or Geneva airports. From either airport, you take a direct Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) train to Visp, which takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Zurich or 2 hours and 45 minutes from Geneva. In Visp, you make a seamless "cross-platform" transfer to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, a specialized cog railway that climbs the steep valley into Zermatt in about 65 minutes. If you are driving, you can only go as far as the village of Täsch, where you must park your car in a massive multi-story terminal and take the "Zermatt Shuttle" train for the final 12-minute leg of the journey. For the ultimate luxury experience, you can take the Glacier Express, which connects Zermatt to St. Moritz, offering panoramic windows to view the Swiss Alps. Regardless of your starting point, the Swiss travel system is so well-integrated that the train is almost always faster and more relaxing than trying to navigate mountain roads.
