EPCOT’s most iconic structure, Spaceship Earth, is a geodesic sphere that is a marvel of 1980s engineering. The exterior is composed of 1,152 triangular Alucobond panels, which are made of a composite material consisting of two thin sheets of aluminum bonded to a polyethylene core. These panels are specifically designed to be self-cleaning and highly reflective to maintain the "shining beacon" look of the future. The sphere is supported by six massive steel legs that are driven into the Florida limestone bedrock. Interestingly, the sphere is actually a "sphere within a sphere." The inner structure is made of steel and reinforced concrete, which houses the dark ride itself. The outer shell is separated by a gap that allows for rain drainage; water flows through the gaps between the triangular panels and into a hidden drainage system that feeds the park's World Showcase lagoon, ensuring that no water ever "pours" off the side of the ball onto guests below.
