There is no single "fake Disneyland," but the term is most famously associated with Shijingshan Amusement Park in Beijing, China. For years, this park gained international notoriety for its blatant use of characters that bore a striking resemblance to Disney icons, including a castle similar to Cinderella's and costumed characters resembling Mickey Mouse, Snow White, and Shrek. The park's unofficial motto was once reportedly "Disney is too far, so please come to Shijingshan." Following legal pressure and the opening of the official Shanghai Disney Resort, many of these "infringing" elements were rebranded or removed. Another notable "knock-off" was Nara Dreamland in Japan, which was built in 1961 as a direct copy of Disneyland (with Walt Disney's initial but later withdrawn cooperation) and featured its own Matterhorn and Main Street; it was abandoned in 2006 and has since been demolished. In the art world, the most famous "parody" was Dismaland, a temporary "bemusement park" created by the artist Banksy in 2015, designed as a dark, satirical commentary on the corporate nature of entertainment and the "happiest place on earth."
