As of 2026, the fastest bullet train route in Japan in terms of operational speed is the Tohoku Shinkansen, specifically the segment between Utsunomiya and Morioka. On this stretch, the "Hayabusa" and "Komachi" services reach a top commercial speed of 320 km/h (200 mph). While the Tokaido Shinkansen (connecting Tokyo to Osaka) is the most famous and busiest route, its top speed is slightly lower at 285 km/h (177 mph) due to more frequent curves. Looking toward the near future, the Chuo Shinkansen (Maglev) is currently being tested at speeds exceeding 500 km/h (310 mph) and will eventually connect Tokyo to Nagoya in just 40 minutes, but it is not yet open for regular public service. For now, the Hayabusa E5/H5 series trains remain the kings of Japanese rail speed, offering a smooth and exceptionally fast journey from Tokyo toward the northern city of Aomori and eventually into Hokkaido via the Seikan Tunnel.
