As of 2023, the fastest commercial maglev train in the world remains the Shanghai Maglev in China, which reaches a top operational speed of 431 km/h (268 mph) during its journey between Pudong International Airport and the city outskirts. However, in terms of technological milestones, China also debuted a new high-speed maglev prototype in 2021 designed to reach 600 km/h (373 mph), which conducted successful test runs throughout 2023. Additionally, Japan's L0 Series Maglev, currently being tested for the Chuo Shinkansen line, holds the absolute world record for any maglev train at 603 km/h (375 mph). While the Japanese version is not yet in public service (projected for the late 2020s or 2030s), it represents the pinnacle of maglev speed. Therefore, while Shanghai holds the commercial record, the 600+ km/h prototypes in China and Japan are the "fastest" units currently in existence.
