The gate check process is a procedure where an airline agent takes your carry-on luggage at the boarding gate or jet bridge instead of the check-in counter. This high-fidelity logistical move typically happens when the overhead bins are full or if you are flying on a small regional jet where standard roll-aboard bags physically do not fit in the cabin. The agent will print a brightly colored tag (often pink or orange) and attach it to your bag. Depending on the airline and aircraft, you will either leave your bag at the end of the jet bridge to be retrieved at the same spot upon landing (known as "valet" or "planeside" check) or the bag will be sent to the carousel at your final destination. It is critical to remove all lithium batteries, medications, and valuables before handing over your bag, as items in the cargo hold are subject to different safety regulations and temperature variations than those in the pressurized cabin.
