The moveable hallway that connects an airport terminal gate directly to the door of an aircraft is technically called a Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB). In the United States and many other regions, it is colloquially known by the trademarked name Jetway, although other industry terms include "air bridge," "loading bridge," or "skybridge." These structures are designed to provide a secure, weather-protected, and level path for passengers to transition from the terminal to the plane without having to walk on the tarmac or climb stairs. PBBs are highly sophisticated engineering feats; they can move on wheels or pedestals and utilize hydraulic systems to adjust their height, length, and angle to accommodate various aircraft sizes, from small regional jets to massive "jumbo" liners like the Boeing 777 or Airbus A350. By creating a climate-controlled seal against the fuselage, they ensure passenger comfort and safety during the boarding and deplaning process in all weather conditions.
