The best time to visit Oahu is from mid-April to early June or between September and mid-December. During these shoulder seasons, attractions are less crowded, festivals are plentiful and airfare and room rates are at their lowest.

First of all, I do not recommend spending only 12 hours in Maui. Maui is gorgeous and clean and perfect. It has all of the best Hawaiian things to offer; beaches, mountains, rainforests, surfing, whale watching, excellent food, and luxury resorts. If you are planning a trip to Maui, give yourself at least 10 days.

It will absolutely make you want to go to Maui again. But it's also a LOT less pricey than a full week! Maui is a fairly expensive destination, and it may end up being more doable to spend a few 3-day weekends in Maui over the course of a few years rather than a full week.
