What is the main square in Menaggio?

Its central position makes it the perfect base to discover lake Como. The heart of the town is gathered around Piazza Garibaldi surrounded by cafés and restaurants.

Many visitors question whether to visit Menaggio or Bellagio during their time in Lake Como. The obvious answer is if you have time, visit both. Bellagio is a much busier town during the day full of day-trippers (popular as it's a great option to add to most Italy itineraries). It quietens down at night time.

Menaggio is a town and comune in the province of Como, Lombardy, northern Italy, located on the western shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the river Senagra. Menaggio has three frazioni: Croce, Loveno and Nobiallo.

Varenna is smaller and quieter, with a higher ratio of visitors to locals (which can sometimes make it harder to avoid the tourist trappings). It is more picturesque, but the hillside would probably be slightly harder to navigate if your in-laws have any mobility issues.

From Menaggio the historic boats leave for a pleasant cruise over the lake to the famous towns of the lake. There is also a car ferry service that connects Menaggio with Varenna and Bellagio. Who wants to move quickly can use the hydrofoils that stop at the main towns around the lake.

Bellagio. Probably the most renowned destination on Lake Como, Bellagio is another pretty town that you really cannot miss when visiting the area. Located right in the middle of the lake, Bellagio has the most unique setting that distinguishes it from any other town on Lake Como.

The most famous street in Bellagio is Salita Serbelloni. Once you climb all the way to the top, turn around, and you'll see the most famous postcard-view of Bellagio (see the featured image at the top of this article). Also, don't miss Chiesa San Giacomo.

It does not have to be expensive, but can be if you want it to be expensive. Typically I pay abot €11 for lunch in a bar and about €15 for dinner in a trattoria for dinner in the evening (both including wine). Restaurants will be more expensive.
