However, in a more general aviation or weather sense, "blue air" is sometimes used by pilots and meteorologists to describe Clear Air Turbulence (CAT)—turbulence that occurs in perfectly clear skies without any visual cues like clouds or storms. This type of turbulence is often associated with the jet stream and is particularly challenging because onboard weather radars cannot detect it. Pilots must rely on "PIREPs" (Pilot Reports) from other aircraft to know it's there. Additionally, in emergency medicine contexts within aviation, a "Code Blue" or similar designation might be used by crew members to signal a life-threatening medical emergency on board, such as a heart attack or collapse, requiring immediate medical attention and a potential flight diversion.
