What is the meaning of PQWL 1?

When you book a ticket to a station for which tickets are issued from the pooled quota, then you get a pooled quota waiting list or PQWL if all the tickets available in the PQ quota have already been booked. This is similar to CKWL (Waiting list on the tatkal quota).

In the Indian Railways booking system of 2026, PQWL 1 stands for Pooled Quota Waiting List, Position 1. This specific status is assigned when you book a ticket for a journey between two intermediate stations (not the train's starting or ending points). Indian Railways groups several smaller stations into a "pool" and assigns a limited number of seats to that pool. "PQWL 1" means you are the very first person in line to get a seat if someone else who booked under that same pooled quota cancels their ticket. While being "Position 1" sounds promising, PQWL has a lower priority for confirmation than the General Waiting List (GNWL). This is because a seat only becomes available if a specific person on your exact route (or a segment of it) cancels. If the status doesn't change to "Confirmed" before the final chart is prepared (usually 4 hours before departure), the ticket is automatically cancelled and refunded, as PQWL passengers are not allowed to board the train without a confirmed seat.
