While many tourists associate Greece primarily with Moussaka, the most widely consumed and ubiquitous food across the country is the Gyro (or Souvlaki). It is the quintessential Greek "fast food," consisting of seasoned meat (typically pork or chicken) cooked on a vertical rotisserie, sliced thin, and served in a warm pita with tomatoes, onions, fried potatoes (fries), and a generous dollop of tzatziki. Beyond street food, the Horiatiki (Greek Salad) is a staple at nearly every lunch and dinner table, featuring tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, onions, and a large slab of feta cheese drizzled in olive oil and oregano. In a broader sense, bread (Pita or Horiatiko Psomi) is the most eaten accompaniment, serving as the base for dips like taramasalata and fava. Greece also has a massive consumption of pulses and vegetables; dishes like Fasolada (white bean soup) are so common they are often referred to as the "national food" of the Greek people.
