O'Hare is unusual in that it serves as a major hub for more than one of the three U.S. mainline carriers; it is a large hub for both United Airlines (which is headquartered in Chicago) and American Airlines. It is also a focus city for Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines.
Once Terminal 5's construction was done, airport authorities realized it made more sense to service all international flights (arrivals and departures) through the newly constructed terminal. Terminal 4 was no longer in service.
While international flights arrive and depart from all the other O'Hare terminals, Terminal 5, which contains only one concourse, Concourse M, is mostly devoted to international flights.
But Terminal 4 was shut down as soon as it was opened. The International airline companies found the operating area too small, and there were problems coordinating bus traffic through the site, too. Airlines and designers quickly began planning a new international terminal, which opened as Terminal 5 in 1993.
