What is the senior age for BART?

BART provides discounts for seniors age 65 and older as well as people with qualified disabled identification. BART also offers a youth discount for riders ages 5 through 18.

For the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in San Francisco, the qualifying age for senior discounts is 65 years and older. As of 2026, seniors who meet this age requirement are eligible for a significant discount of 62.5% off the standard fare. To access this reduced rate, passengers must use a Senior Clipper card, which is specifically encoded with the user's birthdate. These cards can be obtained for free by submitting an application with proof of age, such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, or passport. While BART recently introduced "Tap and Ride" technology allowing riders to pay at fare gates using contactless credit cards or mobile wallets like Apple Pay, these methods currently only charge the full adult fare. To benefit from the senior discount in 2026, you must still utilize the dedicated Senior Clipper card, which can be managed digitally via the Clipper app after the physical card is registered.
