The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, holds the title of the tallest man-made monument in the United States. Standing at 630 feet (192 meters) tall, it is significantly higher than other famous landmarks like the Washington Monument (555 feet) or the Statue of Liberty (305 feet including the pedestal). Completed in 1965 as a tribute to Thomas Jefferson and the westward expansion of the United States, the Arch is an "inverted catenary" curve made of stainless steel. It is equally wide as it is tall, measuring exactly 630 feet from the outer edge of one leg to the other at ground level. Visitors in 2026 can still take a unique tram system—a series of small, egg-shaped pods—that climbs the interior of the hollow structure to reach an observation deck at the very top. From this height, on a clear day, you can see up to 30 miles in every direction across the Mississippi River and the Illinois plains. The Arch is part of the Gateway Arch National Park and remains a masterpiece of mid-century modern engineering and a symbol of American pioneering spirit.
