The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, is the tallest man-made national monument in the United States, standing at exactly 630 feet (192 meters) tall. It is also the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere and the world's tallest arch. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965, the Arch is a part of the Gateway Arch National Park. It is significantly taller than other iconic U.S. monuments; for comparison, it stands 75 feet taller than the Washington Monument (555 feet) and is more than twice the height of the Statue of Liberty (305 feet). Visitors can take a unique tram system to the top for views of the Mississippi River and the St. Louis skyline. Its stainless-steel, weighted catenary design is an engineering marvel that has made it a symbol of the "Gateway to the West." While there are taller buildings in the U.S., the Gateway Arch remains the definitive leader in the category of dedicated national monuments.
