"Tight Bra Syndrome" is a term used to describe a range of physical ailments and discomforts caused by wearing an ill-fitted, overly restrictive brassiere. The primary symptoms include back, neck, and shoulder pain, as a tight band or thin straps can compress the trapezius muscles and force the wearer into a slouching posture. Physically, it can lead to skin irritation, friction rashes, and even "grooves" in the shoulders where the straps dig in. More seriously, a bra that is too tight around the ribcage can inhibit deep breathing and, in extreme cases, cause nerve compression leading to numbness or tingling in the arms (similar to thoracic outlet syndrome). It can also cause digestive issues if the pressure on the diaphragm is too intense. Experts suggest that up to 80% of women wear the wrong bra size; the most common error is a band that is too large and cups that are too small, leading women to over-tighten the straps to compensate for the lack of support. Switching to a professional fitting and broader bands can often alleviate these chronic health issues instantly.
