What is the work schedule for a seaman?

The Able Seaman (Maintenance) (AB (M)) is a day worker, and as such, works a basic eight (8) hour day, five (5) days per week in the Deck Department aboard ship both at sea and in port.

The work schedule for a seaman (merchant mariner) is defined by long periods of extreme intensity followed by significant time off. On a typical commercial vessel in 2026, a seaman usually works on a "Watch System", the most common being the "4 on, 8 off" rotation. This means you are on duty for 4 hours, then have 8 hours for rest, meals, and personal time, twice a day, seven days a week while at sea. Because the ship operates 24/7, there are no weekends or holidays during a "hitch." A standard contract for an officer might be 3 months on, 3 months off, while ratings (junior crew) often work 6 to 9 months on followed by 2 months off. While "on hitch," the work is physically and mentally demanding, involving navigation, engine maintenance, or deck operations regardless of weather. However, the "off time" is entirely your own, often with full pay or a substantial completion bonus, allowing seamen to enjoy months of total freedom. This "cycle of extremes" requires a high level of mental resilience, as you are confined to the ship and away from family for months at a time, but it offers a unique lifestyle and high compensation that is difficult to find in traditional 9-to-5 shore-based roles.
