What Italian city was built on a mountain?

Positano, located along the stunning Amalfi Coast, is famously described as a city built literally into the side of a mountain. The town’s colorful buildings "climb" the steep cliffs, creating a vertical landscape where steep staircases often replace traditional streets. While Positano is perhaps the most iconic example of a coastal mountain town, Italy is also home to other dramatic "hilltop" cities like Orvieto, which sits atop a massive volcanic rock (tufa) plateau, and San Gimignano, known for its medieval towers crowning a Tuscan hill. These mountain and hilltop cities were historically built in high, inaccessible locations for defense against invaders. Today, their unique geography provides breathtaking panoramic views and a labyrinthine charm that attracts millions of visitors. Navigating these cities usually involves significant walking up "scalinate" (stairways), as many areas are entirely car-free due to the extreme mountain gradients.
