I've worn both. I wear fanny packs/bumbags as sling bags - they will usually have you remove a fanny pack if it's actually around your waist, for a ride (they'll have you remove a backpack as well, or any bag that is between you and a lap bar). It's really not inconvenience though.

There are lockers inside both parks as well as outside the Disneyland Park entrance. The prices of locker rentals range from $7-15/day, depending on locker size (prices subject to change.) All in all, I would say a reasonably sized backpack should be fine to take aboard attractions with you. The smaller the better.

We've gone with less than this amount and more than this amount, and find that its a pretty good figure.
