What replaced US Airways?

US Airways (formerly USAir) was a major airline in the United States that operated from 1937 until 2015 when it merged with American Airlines.

US Airways was replaced by American Airlines following a massive merger that was finalized in late 2013. The two carriers combined to create what was then the world's largest airline, operating under the American Airlines name and branding. The integration was a multi-year process; the "US Airways" brand officially made its final flight on October 17, 2015, after which all operations were consolidated under a single operating certificate. Former US Airways hubs in Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Phoenix became integral parts of the expanded American Airlines network. By late 2016, the familiar US Airways "Flag" livery had been almost entirely repainted into American’s silver eagle scheme, and employee uniforms and airport signage were fully transitioned. For travelers in 2026, the legacy of US Airways lives on through these strategic hubs and many of the senior crew members who transitioned to American, but the US Airways name itself has been retired into the history books as a major chapter in the consolidation of the United States aviation industry.
