What ride shut down at Carowinds?

Carowinds amusement park in North Carolina closed a roller coaster Friday after discovering a crack in a support pillar, park officials said. The park says the Fury 325 is one of the tallest and longest rides in the massive park that straddles the North and South Carolina state lines.

In December 2024, Carowinds announced the permanent closure of three major attractions: the Nighthawk roller coaster, the Scream Weaver spinning ride, and the Drop Tower free-fall ride. These removals were part of a strategic plan to clear space for the park's expansion, specifically for the growth of the Camp Snoopy area and future high-capacity attractions. Nighthawk was particularly notable as the Carolinas' first "flying" coaster, where riders were positioned face-down to simulate flight. While its removal was met with nostalgia from fans, the ride was often criticized for its slow loading times and frequent maintenance issues. The cleared land is expected to house a "massive" new roller coaster project currently slated for 2027, following the 2025-2026 debut of new family-friendly attractions like Snoopy's Racing Railway and the Charlie Brown River Raft Blast.

The design of the ride was based on Rebel Yell (now Racer 75), a wooden racing coaster at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia. Thunder Road was closed on July 26, 2015, to make room for expansion at the park.
