While many coasters experience "mid-course brake run" pauses, one of the most famous incidents involving a coaster getting stuck at the very top (the lift hill) occurred on the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the UK. In April 2021, and again in more recent years, passengers had to be evacuated from the 213-foot peak by walking down the emergency stairs. In 2026, modern coasters are designed with "fail-safe" sensors that will automatically stop the lift motor if even a minor anomaly—like a sensor glitch or a loose object on the track—is detected. This often happens at the highest point because it is the most wind-exposed part of the ride. Other notable "stuck" incidents have occurred on Top Thrill 2 (formerly Top Thrill Dragster) and Superman: Escape from Krypton, where the "stall" at the peak is often caused by a balance of gravitational and magnetic forces. Being "stuck" is actually the safety system working correctly, though it is admittedly terrifying for those on board.
