Paradise Bay Standby Viewing for World of Color. If you are unable to enter the virtual queue, you can access standby viewing shortly before the show in Paradise Bay viewing areas. Check in with a cast member there for walk-up viewing options.
Genie Plus is definitely worth it for Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, and if you don't like early starts, you might consider it for Epcot and Animal Kingdom. If you are park hopping, Genie+ is even better value as it maximises the number of rides you have access to.
Susan, you don't need a ticket in order to see World of Color - ONE. However, Disney highly recommends that you join the virtual queue when it opens at 12:00 PM (noon). If the virtual queue reaches capacity, you can arrive 30-45 minutes before the show and ask a Cast Member about walk-up viewing options that day.
The further back you go, the less immersed in the show you'll feel. However, on the plus side, you will be able to see the projections better. In fact, I think the optimal view of the projections is actually all the way back outside of Paradise Park, with your back almost against the Little Mermaid dark ride building.

The attraction's limited capacity means too many guests missing their reservation time could prevent guests later in the day from riding, so guests are encouraged to arrive during their reservation window. Those who miss their window by a significant time may not be allowed to ride the attraction.
Although both are wonderful shows (and you really should see both if at all possible), my vote goes to World of Color. Fantasmic is a great story with awesome effects, but moments in World of Color made me cry. There is something spectacular about the water, colors, and scenes chosen that touches you.
