What type of coaster is Superman?

Superman The Ride (formerly known as Bizarro and Superman – Ride of Steel) is a steel roller coaster at Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts. Built by Swiss manufacturer Intamin, the hypercoaster opened to the public as Superman – Ride of Steel in 2000.

The "Superman" name is used for several distinct types of roller coasters across Six Flags parks, but the two most famous are the Mega Coaster and the Shuttle Coaster. At Six Flags New England, Superman The Ride is an Intamin Mega Coaster (or Hypercoaster), famous for its traditional 208-foot chain lift hill, a massive 221-foot drop into a tunnel, and a layout packed with "airtime" hills and high-speed turns. In contrast, Superman: Escape from Krypton at Six Flags Magic Mountain is an Intamin Reverse Freefall Coaster. This version is a "shuttle" coaster, meaning it doesn't do a full circuit; instead, it uses linear synchronous motors (LSM) to launch riders backwards up a 415-foot vertical tower at speeds of 100 mph before plummeting back down. Other versions, like those at Six Flags Great Adventure or Over Georgia, are Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) Flying Coasters, where riders are tilted forward into a "superman" flying position to experience loops and swooping turns while facing the ground.
