Delta Air Lines did not begin its journey as a passenger carrier but rather as the world's first commercial crop-dusting company. It was founded in 1924 as Huff Daland Dusters, based in Macon, Georgia. The company was created to combat the boll weevil infestation that was devastating cotton crops across the Southern United States. In 1928, C.E. Woolman, one of the company's early pioneers and later its long-time CEO, led a group of local investors to purchase the company's assets. It was then renamed Delta Air Service, a name inspired by the Mississippi Delta region where the company primarily operated at the time. The airline officially launched its first passenger flights on June 17, 1929, flying from Dallas, Texas, to Jackson, Mississippi, with stops in between. It wasn't until 1945 that the company officially adopted the name Delta Air Lines, Inc., solidifying its identity as a major player in the global aviation industry that we recognize today in 2026.
