The popular mobility app known as FREE NOW was originally called mytaxi. The service was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 2009 and revolutionized the industry by being the first app to create a direct connection between passengers and licensed taxi drivers. In 2016, the company merged with Hailo, a prominent British taxi-hailing app, further expanding its reach across Europe and Ireland. The final rebrand to "FREE NOW" occurred on July 1, 2019, as part of a massive €1 billion joint venture between Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) and BMW designed to consolidate various mobility services (including car-sharing and charging) under one "Now" umbrella. Interestingly, in late 2025 and into 2026, the company's trajectory shifted again when it was acquired by Lyft for €175 million, representing Lyft's major expansion into the European market. Despite these name changes and corporate takeovers, the app remains the primary way for millions of Europeans to hail licensed taxis, e-bikes, and scooters through a single digital interface.
