What went wrong with Disneyland Paris?

Despite its blockbuster attendance, Disneyland Paris has rarely made a profit since its ornate iron gates swung open in 1992. Its bottom line has been weighed down by charges including interest payments on the $1.8 billion (€1.7 billion) of bank borrowings that were used to fund the construction of the resort.

There were reasons for failure due to marketing and administration decisions made before and after the launch of the park. The whole concept of trying to sell an American product to Europe, while trying to adapt some features of the park to suit a wide variety of cultural tastes, doomed the project.

Disneyland Anaheim is by far superior to Disneyland Paris. The Paris park suffers for many reasons, mainly that Europeans can be far more obnoxious than Americans which can make waiting in line a chore. The weather is also better in Anaheim and the attractions are superb.

3. THE PARK'S NAME CHANGED BECAUSE 'EURO' WAS TOO BORING FOR EUROPEANS. Disneyland Paris was originally called Euro Disney, but research into low visitor numbers found Europeans associated 'Euro' too much with finance and work. Americans on the other hand, thought it sounded glamorous!
