Star Alliance created a new milestone for the airline industry with its founding on 14 May, 1997. As the first global airline alliance, linking five major airlines into a single network, it offered a completely new type of service to the international traveller.
Apart from this prestigious title, the company has received the Best Airline for Onboard Service and Flight Attendants for eight consecutive years, among other awards. Asiana Airlines is rated as a 5-Star airline by Skytrax.
The airline has been under restructuring since it filed for bankruptcy under the U.S. Chapter 11 process. After several months, they reached a significant milestone: it will be acquired by a new consortium that includes Air France-KLM, leaving behind Star Alliance and joining SkyTeam.
Emirates has collaborated with other airlines, but is not a member of any of the three global airline alliances – Oneworld, SkyTeam, or Star Alliance. In 2000, the airline briefly considered joining Star Alliance, but opted to remain independent.
As a member of the Oneworld Alliance (a founding member, in fact), Cathay partners with more than a dozen other airlines. Additionally, Cathay partners with several airlines outside of its own alliance, many of which are members of Star Alliance. These include: Air Canada.
