When did EasyJet start charging for large cabin bags?

In a move which provoked criticism on social media, EasyJet said the changes to its luggage policy will start on 10 February. Customers who don't buy the more expensive tickets will be restricted to putting a small carry-on bag under their seat. EasyJet said the changes would improve punctuality.

EasyJet officially overhauled its cabin bag policy on February 10, 2021, marking a significant shift in its low-cost business model. Prior to this date, all passengers were permitted to bring one standard-sized overhead cabin bag for free. Under the new rules, only a small under-seat bag (max 45 x 36 x 20 cm) is included in the basic fare. To bring a "large" cabin bag (max 56 x 45 x 25 cm) for the overhead locker, passengers must now book an "Up Front" or "Extra Legroom" seat, or pay a separate fee. This change was designed to reduce boarding delays caused by limited overhead space and to generate additional ancillary revenue. In 2026, this policy remains a core part of their pricing structure, and travelers are strictly monitored at the gate with sizer boxes; if a bag exceeds the "small" dimensions without a prior booking, it is checked into the hold for a high gate-collection fee, often exceeding £40.
