When did Kenya Airways crash?

Kenya Airways Flight 507 was a scheduled Abidjan–Douala–Nairobi passenger service, operated by Kenya Airways. On 5 May 2007, the Boeing 737–800 aircraft serving the flight crashed in the initial stage of its second leg, immediately after takeoff from Douala International Airport in Cameroon.



Kenya Airways has had several accidents and incidents throughout its history. The most notable and tragic crash was:

Kenya Airways Flight 507 on May 5, 2005.

  • Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
  • Route: Douala, Cameroon → Nairobi, Kenya
  • Circumstances: The plane crashed into a swampy forest shortly after takeoff from Douala during a storm. All 114 people on board (105 passengers and 9 crew) perished.
  • Cause: The official investigation concluded the crash was due to spatial disorientation of the crew after a failure to properly follow instrument procedures during a nighttime takeoff in stormy weather. The crew failed to recognize that the aircraft was banking and turning until it was too late.

    • Aircraft: Airbus A310-304
    • Route: Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire → Lagos, Nigeria
    • Circumstances: Crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after takeoff from Abidjan. 169 of the 179 people on board were killed.
    • Cause: Attributed to pilot error and fatigue, with the crew failing to respond correctly to a stall warning.
  2. Earlier Hijacking Incident (a different type of crash):
