When did the Dead Sea become salty?

Way back in time, going back about 3.7 million years ago, it was a salt water lagoon. Through geological upheavals from the Arabian and African tectonic plates the sea was cut off from the Mediterranean. In the harsh desert environment, water evaporated, leaving behind the salty remains that are still there today.
