When should I add baggage to my flight?

During check-in You can indicate how many bags you're bringing and pay the applicable fees during the check-in process within 24 hours of your flight's departure. For your convenience, we recommend checking in online or at one of our airport kiosks.

You should add baggage to your flight at the time of booking or at least 24 hours before your departure via the airline's website or app. In 2026, the pricing for checked luggage is tiered: it is almost always cheapest to pay during the initial ticket purchase. If you wait until the online check-in window (24 hours prior), the price often increases by 10-20%. The most expensive place to add a bag is at the airport check-in counter, where airlines like Spirit, Ryanair, or even major carriers like United and Lufthansa may charge nearly double the online rate. Adding bags early also helps you avoid "gate-check" fees, which occur if your carry-on is deemed too large and must be moved to the hold at the last minute. Furthermore, pre-paying for your bags online saves significant time at the airport, as it allows you to use the automated "Self-Service Bag Drop" kiosks, often letting you bypass the long lines at the full-service ticket counters entirely.

It's nearly always cheaper to book extra hold luggage in advance rather than paying excess baggage fees at the airport. Airlines know that keeping within weight/size limits is not always possible, so they encourage you to plan ahead by selling extra weight online.

Before you check into your flight, you can buy an additional bag to put in the hold. This is a costly option that gets more expensive the closer to your date of departure and even costlier if added on at the airport. There are still weight limitations and not every airline will allow you to book an extra suitcase.

Checking in for a flight early or late comes down to more personal preference than anything else. As long as you check in before the window closes, you'll (most likely) get a seat on the aircraft. But, being strategic, one way or the other, might bag you a better one.

That depends if you have several kg overweight and are asking for the price per kg or if you really just only have one single kg extra. For a singe kg above the limit you most probably will not get charged, especially not on a full service airline. There is usually a tolerance in the range of 2–3kg, sometimes up to 5.

Normally, the cheaper the flight the more restrictive they are with all the rules. Therefore, if you buy a cheap flight, the baggage fees will normally be higher. If you buy a higher priced fare, normally the baggage is more inclusive (can take more weight) or will cost less to add more.

What if my luggage is 0.5 kg overweight? It's over the limit so assume you will be charged. There must be something in your hand luggage you can put in your pocket to get it under. Wear a coat with big pockets.

If your Check-in Bag exceeds your baggage weight allowance (10kg or 20kg), you will be charged an additional excess weight fee per extra kilo at the airport.

What happens if my luggage is overweight? For hold luggage, most airlines set a weight limit for single items of luggage. Usually, this is 23kg. If your hold luggage is over and you haven't paid for extra, you might be charged.

There are generally two things you can do if your suitcase is over the weight limit: you can either pay the fee for the extra weight or take some things out so that the weight is then within the allowed limit. You should always take out smaller and heavier stuff since you can put them in your carry-on instead.

One disadvantage is certainly that many people have poor time management and arrive too late at the airport if they check in online. For some, this can lead to unwanted time pressure. On the other hand, those who still have to check in at the airport itself usually arrive early enough and are therefore over-punctual.
