The last orca born at a SeaWorld park was a female named Kyara, born on April 19, 2017, at SeaWorld San Antonio. Her birth was a significant and somber milestone for the company, as it marked the final calf to be born under SeaWorld's 2016 commitment to end its orca breeding program following years of public pressure and the impact of the documentary Blackfish. Kyara was the daughter of Takara, a high-profile orca who was already pregnant when the policy was announced. Tragically, Kyara's life was short; she passed away just three months later, in July 2017, due to a severe case of pneumonia. Since her death, no other orcas have been born at any SeaWorld location, and the current population of whales across their Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio parks is the last generation that will be held in captivity by the company. This shift has led SeaWorld to pivot its brand toward more traditional thrill rides and broader marine conservation efforts, while the remaining orcas are now featured in "educational encounters" rather than the theatrical performances of the past.
