Where does Hakone Ropeway start?

Hakone Ropeway connects 4 major stations - Sounzan Station, where you can transfer to the Hakone Cable Car, Owakudani Station, a popular sightseeing spot with many visitors, Ubako Station, which leads to Ubako Hot Springs and Togendai Station on the shore of Ashinoko Lake.

The Hakone Ropeway officially starts at Sounzan Station, which serves as the gateway for most travelers embarking on the "Hakone Loop." Sounzan is easily reached via the Hakone Tozan Cable Car from Gora Station. In 2026, the ropeway remains a world-record-holding attraction that transports passengers across four main stations: Sounzan, Owakudani, Ubako, and Togendai. The highlight of the journey is the segment between Sounzan and Owakudani, where you soar over the active volcanic valley and can see sulfuric steam rising from the vents below. The ropeway ends at Togendai Station on the shores of Lake Ashi, where you can transfer to the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (the "Pirate Ship"). The entire journey takes about 30 minutes if you don't stop, but most people spend an hour or more at Owakudani to eat the famous "black eggs" (kuro-tamago) which are said to add seven years to your life. The gondolas run every minute and can hold up to 18 people, offering 360-degree views that include Mt. Fuji on clear days.
